## Mechanism of action

Simvastatin is a prodrug and is hydrolyzed to its active β-hydroxyacid form, simvastatin acid, after administration. Simvastatin acid and its metabolites are inhibitors of HMG-CoA reductase, an enzyme that produces HMG-CoA to mevalonate, a precursor of cholesterol.
