## Mechanism of action

Amlodipine is a dihydropyridine calcium antagonist (calcium channel blocker) that inhibits the transmembrane influx of calcium ions into vascular smooth muscle and cardiac muscle. Experimental data suggest that amlodipine binds to both dihydropyridine and nondihydropyridine binding sites.
